People
are consumed with the things 'of the earth:' With
themselves, their lives, finding fulfillment, discovering
their purpose.
They cry out, “Who am I?
What am I here for?
And tell me an answer I want to hear.”
“I want more control of my life. I want to discover my purpose and it needs to be the purpose
that I assign to it. Help
me to discover the purpose I designed for myself that I am not
fully aware of.”
“Tickle my ears with what I want to
hear. Give me an answer that makes me the center, gives
me power, leaves me in control. And don't tell me
anything about God, Jesus or being 'born again!"
This kind of thinking will lead them on,
give them an answer that will last for a short while, but they
will end up asking the same questions when this ‘answer’
wears off. They
will not have found their ultimate purpose.
They
need to set their minds on "things above" to
get an answer.
You see, in order for us to find our
ultimate purpose, we need to find God’s purpose.
In order to find God’s purpose we must do an
outrageous thing! We
must treat God like God!
In order for us to hear from God, we must act like He
IS God – not just some guy down the street with a treat for
us.
In order to find the ultimate purpose,
God’s purpose, for our lives, we need to step down from our
thrown and put God into it.
We need to put Him on the throne of our lives and
acknowledge Him as King.
If you were to go to the Queen of
England’s palace, do you think you could just walk past the
guards, into her private living room and plop down into a
chair, legs hanging over the arms and then proceed to tell her
what you want to do in the kingdom that day?
Not only could you not get in there –
the guards would stop you - but even if you did, she
wouldn’t listen to you!
“Who are you? Who do you think you are?
Get out of here! Guards
– remove this person!” she would command.
So why do we think that we can waltz in
to God’s territory of eternal purpose and tell Him what we
want to do with the life that He has given us?
We haven’t even acknowledged His
existence. We’ve
called Him ‘the higher power' and not even given Him the
least amount of respect.
Like “Hey buddy, you are my higher power and are here
to fulfill my wants, needs and desires.”
Similar to a Genie in a bottle. Rub the bottle 3 times, out comes the Genie and then you
proceed to get the wishes you have requested fulfilled.
There are the 'things of earth.'
We have questions so we look for answers.
We get self-help books.
We call the psychic hotline to see what they have to
say about it. If
we like the answer, we’ll go with it.
If not, we’ll keep on looking for an answer that we
like.
We are self-made people.
We are in charge and we believe that we need to find
our purpose, meaning, and identity.
We have a deep yearning, a desire - a
place that needs to be filled.
We all naturally search.
Something IS missing.
But our independent nature moves us away from the true
source of meaning and purpose.
We must fight the natural direction toward self for a
moment; we need to let go of self to be able to contact the
real God.
The first step to finding out our
ultimate purpose is to acknowledge God as GOD; to set our
minds on 'things above;' to open our minds to the possibility
that there is something ‘above’ to set our minds on.
The definition of God according to
Webster’s Dictionary is “The one Supreme Being; the
creator of the universe.”
We must acknowledge THIS God and no
other. And we
must acknowledge His authority, His power, and His might.
Acknowledge He is God of the Universe, THE Higher
Power. None come
before Him. None
are mightier.
Once we have taken this step we can be on
our way. Away
from the things of this earth - the false readings of psychics
and healers and tarot card readers and astrology – and to
things above, the true source of truth and meaning.
This is a big step: stepping away
from ourselves instead of into ourselves and taking the power
we thought we had and giving it to God.
Admitting to the weakness we have tried
to deny.
Admitting to the hopelessness we have
tried to prop up.
Admitting to the lack of control we have
been trying to hide.
Because this is our true self. We
are weak, hopeless and out of control.
Sure, we can get it together for a while in each area
of our lives. But we can’t keep all the plates spinning at one time.
Eventually the spinning plates stop spinning and start
to fall down, one by one.
We realize we need help.
We have to open ourselves to a new way;
we have to say, “OK. I’ll try God.”
Before most people come to a point where
they are willing to ‘try’ God, they have tried everything
else.
They have tried everything else that
they could think of to bring them joy, happiness, fulfillment,
purpose. Those results either didn’t work or they were
only temporary, so they had to find something else to
‘try.’
God is the last resort.
‘OK, I’ll try God,’ they say.
In that moment, they let down their
guard. They open
up, expose their weakness, and give up control – just for a
second. Like
getting into a cold pool of water.
They brace themselves, dip their toe into the water and
cautiously test the water.
They give just a little bit of themselves.
No commitment - just incase it’s too cold.
They open up and try the Lord!
And the caution is understandable. This is the first time in their lives that they have thought
about the future of their soul – a very important thing to
think about.
The amazing thing is that when they did
it, they instantly knew that this is what they have been
looking for. Like a well-tailored suit, or a glove that fits perfectly,
God through Jesus Christ came into their lives and filled
every void they had – instantly! And so it would be with
you.
Once you try it you’ll never go back.
It instantly feels so good, so right, and so complete.
Hope, purpose, direction all come in to
your life and your being.
You experience a comfort peace, a joy and a security
that you never felt before.
You instantly feel that Someone Who knows what they are
doing is now behind the wheel.
These are the things above.
You will be like so many others who said,
“Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
Once you see the awesomeness of God, you will say,
“God, forgive me for not acknowledging You!
Forgive me for my sins.
Forgive me for the way I used to live.
Show me Your way. Your truths. Give
me Your strength, your purpose.
Teach me the meanings I’ve been searching for.
I am open, I am yours, and You are GOD.”
The starting point has been reached.
You have started to set your mind on things above.
God is now in the position in your life where He needs
to be. God will
see you now; the guards have let you in.
Jesus, the mediator, will take your requests directly
to God. You have
access to the highest power on Earth, in Heaven and the
Universe.
Not just ‘a’ higher power, but
“THE’ Highest Power.
As you walk with Him through prayer,
reading His Word in the Bible, fellowship with other believers
– He will take you to new heights of understanding.
You will start looking at things from a different
viewpoint. You will see the difference between what you
thought was truth and God’s truth.
As you do this God’s truth will become your truth –
your way of life.
Your mind is now set on things
above.
And there is never a dull moment.
Once He’s taught you about one truth and you’ve
understood and applied that life principle, then He will show
you another universal truth. A new answer to a mystery will be
revealed. He will
amaze you over and over again.
You will have discovered a higher, better way.
You will want to set your mind on
things above, not on earthly things.
Who ever said this was boring? This is the direct connection with the meaning of life
and purpose that you have been searching for!
You see we have been looking in the wrong
direction. We’ve
got to look up, not down or in.
We have got to discover looking up, up to find the true
viewpoint.
But you have to take the plunge. You’ve got to open yourself up.
You have to get yourself out of the way and be
vulnerable for a moment; to open up the wall you’ve had up
around yourself and let God in.
As you do this, you will not only find
YOUR purpose in life, but the meaning and purpose of LIFE
itself.
“Here I am!
I stand at the door and know.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will
come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
Rev 3:20
These are the things above.
Jesus is waiting for you to let Him in to
your life. He
wants to show you total fulfillment.
Your purpose in life.
To teach you the true meaning of love and life.
Make the exchange.
Give your old life over to a new life.
Let Jesus come in and dine with you.
You will never be hungry again.
Clear the table, the King is coming to dinner!
“Set your mind on the things
which are above, not on the things which are on the
earth.” Colossians 3:2
